Victoria was the daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent (son of
George III of the United Kingdom) and Viktoria of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, a minor
German princess whose family rose to prominence during the early 19th
century. The early deaths of her father,
uncles, and several cousins meant that Victoria inherited the British throne at
the age of 18 in 1837. She ruled the
British Empire until her death in 1901. Her
long reign, set against the backdrop of the Industrial Revolution, saw distinct
changes in family life and working conditions for the modern British citizens
as well as the creation of a worldwide empire.
Victoria and her husband Albert raised a large family of children and
grandchildren who married into and provided heirs for the most prominent
families in Europe. Today descendants of
Victoria either occupy or claim most of the major European thrones.
